Johor floods: Almost 8,000 people seeking shelter in relief centres

JOHOR BARU: The number of flood victims in Johor has risen to 7,947 as of 8pm tonight.

Johor state secretary, Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani, said the victims are being housed in 53 temporary evacuation centres (PPS) in six districts.

He said Kota Tinggi continued to be the worst-hit district, recording 4,705 victims from 1,289 families, now placed in 26 PPS.

"Johor Baru also saw an increase in flood victims, with 1,753 people from 473 families seeking shelter in 12 PPS," he said.

Azmi, who is also the state Disaster Management Committee chairman, said Kluang saw a dip in the number of victims from 1,592 people to 1,306 tonight. The district also saw a number of PPS closures from 13 to 9.

"As of 8pm, Kulai, Segamat and Pontian have the same number of flood victims, namely 86, 75 and 22, respectively," he said.
