Another 221 people held for flouting RMCO SOPs

KUALA LUMPUR: There was a significant increase in the number of arrests of people flouting the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) on Tuesday.

Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said 221 individuals were detained for violating the standard operating procedures (SOP) compared to just 72 the day before.

He said out of that, 212 individuals were issued compound, eight were remanded and one was released on bail.

"Among the offences committed were activities in pubs and nightclubs (118); failure to provide equipment and customer record (34); physical distancing (43); failure to wear face masks (18); failure to abide by the quarantine order (1); premises operating beyond permitted hours (5); and immigrants without valid documents (2).

"Police carried out 61,462 checks on Tuesday. They conducted checks at 3,945 supermarkets; 5,405 restaurants and 1,518 hawkers; 1,204 factories; 3,870 banks and 788 government offices.

"Also inspected was 1,110 land transport terminal; 193 water transport terminal, and 83 air transport terminal," he said in a statement today.

On the Op Benteng, Ismail Sabri said 24 arrests were made involving 61 illegal immigrants and five boat skippers.

In Bandar Penawar, Johor, the army had arrested 26 illegal immigrants and five boat skippers, while another 12 illegal immigrants were detained in Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah.

During roadblocks mounted at 72 locations nationwide, the police had inspected 24,972 vehicles and detained 11 people.

On Malaysian returnees between July 24 and Sept 8, 25,668 had flown in from the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Singapore, Vietnam, Brunei, Qatar, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, India, United Arab Emirates, Japan, Turkey, South Korea, Iran, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, East Timor, Taiwan, China, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Papua New Guinea, Egypt, Spain, France, Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

Of the number, 10,390 people had been placed under mandatory quarantine at 70 hotels and eight public training institutes and private learning centres; 68 had been sent for treatment at hospitals and; 15,230 discharged and allowed to return home.

On the ongoing sanitation exercise, the Housing and Local Government Ministry had carried out operations at 12,973 premises including 2,708 business centres, 5,708 government buildings, 1,596 housing areas, 2,607 public areas and 354 markets.

"Since March 30, a total of 9,883 sanitation operations have been carried out in 134 zones. On Tuesday, nine operations were conducted in six green zones in four states," Ismail Sabri said.

He also said SOP checks were held at 12 sites and all were found to be compliant.

On the supply of necessities, he said SOP checks at 1,598 premises found 1,582 were compliant, two were issued with advice and another two received warnings.
