Covid-19: Jerantut night markets closed, no major gathering allowed

JERANTUT: The sudden spike in Covid-19 cases here has prompted the district Disaster Management Committee to temporarily cease all 'pekan sehari' (one-day market) and night markets for 14 days.

The committee, in a statement, said as part of the proactive measures to break the Covid-19 infection chain here, all events involving gathering of large crowds, kenduri and large scale programmes will be suspended for 14 days.

"The Tengku Ahmad mosque and Surau Al-Muflihin located at public low cost housing areas (level 3 and 4) has been ordered close along with all the preschools and kindergartens at the vicinity.

"All food vendors at public low cost housing areas can only offer take-away services while all recreational spots including the via-ferrata at Paya Gunung Extreme Park, Taman Tasik Teratai and football fields that cannot adopt physical distancing measures will be closed for 14 days," read the statement.

Meanwhile, Tengku Ahmad mosque chairman Khairunnisa Aris said the latest directive was issued when four positive Covid-19 cases were found at the public low cost housing areas (level 3 and 4) and at the housing area at Bandar Baru here on Sept 25.

"All those tested positive had a travel history to Sabah. We urge the public to provide their cooperation and not spread fake news which will only cause more panic," he said.

Meanwhile, state health committee chairman Datuk Seri Norol Azali Sulaiman said Covid-19 cases in Jerantut and Kuantan were under control.

"The relevant agencies have taken the required measures to control the spread of the virus and those tested positive are now being treated. There is no reason to panic," he said.
