Cat named 'Oyen' rescued from Puchong river by dedicated firemen

KUALA LUMPUR: Cats have nine lives, as they say, and it rang true for a lucky feline that got itself into trouble and ended up on a pile of drifted garbage stuck to a bridge pillar near D'island in Taman Putra Perdana, Puchong, today.

How the cat ended up in the precarious situation is not known, but as the river water was high and flowing rapidly following a downpour, time was of the essence to save the wet kitty.

The drama unfolded when the Fire and Rescue Department received an unusual distress call at 5.17pm to save the poor cat.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Hafisham Mohd Noor said 11 firemen, a fire engine and an EMRS from the Cyberjaya Fire and Rescue Department were deployed to the scene and arrived 16 minutes later.

"As soon as the firemen arrived, they used the rappelling technique and pulley system to (reach) the cat (and bring it to) safety."

The team spared no effort in the operation, which ended at 6.35pm with a tearful reunion for Oyen (a Malaysian term of endearment for ginger-coloured cats) and its owner.
