Selangor warns people to brace for floods

KUALA LUMPUR: The people have been advised to brace for possible flooding due to the high tide phenomenon accompanied by torrential rain expected till Dec 31.

A Selangor government official said it was important for folks living along the coastline to adhere to all instructions issued by the authorities to prevent untoward incidents.

He said, though the high tide phenomenon, with the highest sea level hitting 5.8m on Nov 15 and Nov 16, was now over, the rakyat must continue to be vigilant.

"Residents at risky areas are advised to follow the directives of security officials. They must also limit water recreational activities along the coast line," he told the New Straits Times.

The official added that in Kuala Langat, the temporary flood relief centres at SK Kebun Baharu and the Nurul Shams surau in Batu 9 have been closed since 11am.

In Kuala Selangor, the relief centres in SK Parit Mahang and SK Ijok, which housed 51 senior citizens from the Al-Jashiera Old Folks Home and nine families from Jalan Haji Ehsan, Ijok, were closed yesterday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Kuala Selangor Civil Defence Force officer Shaiful Azril Zainal said parents should bar their children from playing in the rain or in monsoon drains because of uncertain weather conditions.

"We do not want a repeat of fatal incidents in other states where children drowned in monsoon drains. It is a mistake that parents will regret," he said.

Shaiful also advised those living in flood prone areas to keep their documents on higher grounds and follow the Covid-19 Standard Operating Procedures to break the transmission chain.

Meanwhile, Shaiful said they are engaging the assistance of village heads on information of any affected sickly senior citizen who may have difficulties moving to the relief centres.

"The village heads know their areas well and they will inform us if there are immobile senior citizens and the disabled who are trapped in their homes.

"If they need our help, we will despatch a team of personnel to render assistance. With information from the village heads, we save on manpower and make use of every tier of community to furnish us with information," he said.
