Ismail Sabri: Border security with Thailand must be enhanced

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia must enhance its security preparedness and response at its borders, especially in northern states bordering Thailand.

Senior Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said in light of the attack on two GOF personnel at the Padang Besar border this week, Malaysia must find ways to improve safety and security to avoid cross-border crime.

He said the Armed Forces, which is leading Ops Benteng, has been directed to hold a meeting with police and other relevant enforcement agencies safeguarding the borders to discuss how existing security could be improved.

"The army is ready to increase the number of personnel, since we also have our Northern Border Regiment ready to be deployed, if needed.

"However, that alone would not be enough to curb smugglers and smuggling activities at the border," he said.

Ismail said the government is looking at options, among which, is to build more border posts for better surveillance along the stretch, as well as acquire new and modern assets for enforcement personnel.

"Fortunately, we have a bigger budget allocation this time, of RM1.6 billion, which can be used to get new and modern assets which could help us enhance the security at our country's borders," he said.

Ismail also thanked the Thai government for its good cooperation and willingness to work together with Malaysia in fighting cross-border crimes.
