Terengganu recovering from floods

CHUKAI: The flood situation in Terengganu is showing signs of improvement as the number of evacuees dropped to 1,041 evacuees from 269 families in 12 Temporary Evacuation Centers (PPS) in three districts - Kemaman, Dungun and Marang.

Good weather conditions since midnight provided much relief to affected residents who returned to their respective homes after water level continued to recede in affected areas.

Based on the State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat report, as of 8am today, one PPS in Chukai was closed bringing the total number of victims housed in eight other centres to 897 people from 229 families.

PPS Balairaya Teladas which previously housed a total of 459 victims from 105 families was closed this morning.

The other centres that are still active are Kampung Air Putih Civic Hall (383 victims, 92 families), Kampung Felda Seberang Tayor Multipurpose Hall (242 victims, 60 families), Kampung Batu 16 Mosque (32 victims, nine families), Batu 14 Mosque (16 victims, six families), Batu 14 Public Hall (72 victims,17 families), Pasir Gajah (29 victims, seven families) and Surau Kampung Banho (38 victims, eight families).

Meanwhile the PPS at Surau Haji Othman recorded an increase to 85 victims from 30 families.

Dungun also showed a reduction in the number of victims, with the figure falling from 159 victims (41 families) to 130 victims (35 families) while Marang's evacuees remained at 14 victims from five families.

Meanwhile, Bernama reported that in KEDAH, 691 evacuees from 183 families have been placed at six centres in Kulim and Kuala Muda following flash floods after a heavy downpour yesterday evening

According to the Civil Defence Force, in Kulim, 256 evacuees are being sheltered at PPS Masjid Sungai Seluang, PPS Surau Kampung Haji Wahab, Dewan Masjid Al Huda Kampung Jerung, while in Kuala Muda, 435 victims are housed at two centres in Mukim Sungai Petani and Mukim Sidam Kiri.

In PERAK, continuous rain since midday yesterday until midnight caused several areas in the Kinta district to be inundated, forcing 27 victims to be evacuated to PPS Dewan Awam Hock Aun.

A Perak Fire and Rescue Department spokesman in a statement informed that in Hilir Perak, floods hit several villages in Changkat Jong, Teluk Intan causing 76 people to be moved to the PPS at Dewan Majlis Perbandaran Teluk Intan.

Meanwhile, according to the disaster information application of the state Welfare Department, a relief centre was activated at a hall in Kampung Bendang Luas for flood victims in the Larut, Matang and Selama districts yesterday. It is now sheltering 27 victims from seven families.

In MELAKA, despite the PPS Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Parit Gantong in Jasin being closed at 3.30pm yesterday, it was reopened at 8pm after several houses were hit by floods when Sungai Teluk Rimba overflowed its banks earlier.

Melaka Civil Defence Force director Lt Kol (PA) Effendy Ali said 19 people from four families were moved to the centre.

In Bintulu, SARAWAK, the number of flood evacuees rose to 364 people this morning after 227 more victims were moved to two centres as compared to 137 people last night.

The state Disaster Management Committee secretariat said 200 victims were at the PPS in Stadium Muhibbah and 164 at the PPS Dewan Suarah Bintulu.

On Saturday the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued an orange level weather alert for several districts in Sabah until today, and a yellow level weather alert for several areas in Kelantan and Terengganu until Monday.

MetMalaysia said under the orange level alert, continuous heavy rain is expected in Sabah, involving the areas of Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran and Kota Belud as well as in Labuan.

The yellow level alert is issued for the districts of Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Baru, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Bachok, Machang, Pasir Puteh and Kuala Krai in Kelantan as well as the areas of Besut, Setiu, Kuala Nerus and Kuala Terengganu in Terengganu.

Meanwhile, a bad weather warning until today has been issued for Kemaman in Terengganu as well as Kuantan, Bera, Pekan and Rompin in Pahang; and Sarawak (Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah and Bintulu).

Bad weather is also expected in Sipitang, Tenom, Nabawan, Keningau and Tambunan, Ranau and Kudat in Sabah.
