More than 43,000 flood victims still at relief centres

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 43,232 people in five states are still being housed in temporary evacuation centres after floods inundated their homes.

The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) said as of 6pm today, Pahang has the highest number of flood victims at 22,261 followed by Terengganu (13,450), Kelantan (6,117), Johor (1,259) and Perak (145).

Nadma said the temporary evacuation centres were based in 26 districts, namely nine in Pahang, Kelantan (6), Johor (5), three each in Perak and Terengganu.

The affected districts in Pahang are Bera, Jerantut, Kuantan, Lipis, Maran, Pekan, Raub, Rompin and Termeloh.

In Kelantan, the affected districts are Gua Musang, Jeli, Kota Baru, Kuala Krai and Pasir Mas. Johor, meanwhile, has seen Johor Baru, Kluang, Kota Tinggi, Mersing and Segamat hit by floods.

In Terengganu, the affected districts are Dungun, Hulu Terengganu and Kemaman while Hilir Perak, Hulu Perak and Perak Tengah are similarly affected in Perak.

The floods have so far claimed eight lives, namely four in Pahang, three in Johor and one in Kelantan.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) forecasted heavy rain over Terengganu (Dungun and Kemaman), Pahang, Johor, and Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu and Mukah in Sarawak until next Tuesday (Jan 12).

Heavy rain is also expected in the interiors of Sabah including, Kuala Penyu, Beaufort and Tambunan, its west coast and Kudat starting Sunday until Jan 12.
