10 new Covid-19 clusters detected in 5 states, 2 FTs

KUALA LUMPUR: Ten new Covid-19 clusters have been detected in five states and two federal territories - Selangor, Sabah, Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Pahang, Melaka, and Labuan.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said from the 10 new clusters reported today, six were linked to workplaces and the rest involved a family gathering, interstate travel, and detainees.

He said the Sepang 2 detention centre cluster in Selangor, registered the highest number with 80 cases.

"The cases under this cluster tested positive for Covid-19 on Jan 3 following a screening conducted for the detainees before they were sent to their home countries.

"The name of the cluster refers to the place where the transmission took place at the Immigration Detention Depot located at Jalan Pekeliling 4, Sepang. As of Jan 17, 238 individuals have been screened, of which 80 tested positive," he said in a statement today.

Another cluster detected in Selangor, he said, was the Jalan Pandan Indah workplace-linked in cluster in Hulu Langat with 77 Covid-19 cases.

Dr Noor Hisham said the cluster started to gather positive cases on Jan 17 after a targeted screening exercise involving over 87 people was conducted at a company in Jalan Pandan Indah here.

In Sabah, the Taman Ikan Jinak cluster was identified in Tuaran and Kota Belud involving a family gathering.

"The index case for this cluster (Case-138,292) was reported Covid-19 positive on Jan 12 as a result of symptomatic individual screening.

"The name of the cluster refers to the locality of the event which was held at Taman Ikan Jinak Melangkap Tiong, Kota Belud.

"As of Jan 17, 46 individuals have been screened, of which 21 tested positive."

Another cluster in Sabah is the Jalan Mawila workplace-linked cluster in Kota Kinabalu that logged 15 cases.

"The index case (case 142,805) is a member of the army at Wisma Pelayaran Tentera Laut Diraja Malaysia (TLDM) Sepanggar, Jalan Mawila, Kota Kinabalu.

"The case was reported positive on Jan 13 following a screening before an interstate travel. As of Jan 17, 130 individuals linked to this cluster had been screened," Dr Noor Hisham said.

In Johor, another workplace-linked cluster was identified in Johor Baru - the Jalan Perak cluster.

"Cases for this cluster tested positive starting Dec 31 as a result of targeted screening at a factory located at Jalan Perak 4, Kawasan Perindustrian Pasir Gudang.

"As of Jan 17, a total of 504 individuals have been screened, of which 35 tested positive."

He said a workplace cluster was also reported in Lembah Pantai, Kuala Lumpur - the Jalan Menerung cluster.

Cases for this cluster have been reported positive since Jan 17 following a targeted screening in the workplace involving security guards at Apartment One Menerung, Jalan Menerung, Bangsar, he said.

"As of today, a total of 26 people had been screened, of which 23 cases were found Covid-19 positive."

The Jalan Yap construction site workplace cluster was also identified in Kuala Lumpur with 21 positive cases.

"Cases for this cluster tested positive since Jan 17 as a result of targeted screening at a construction site located at Jalan Yap Kwan Seng, Kampung Baru.

"To date, a total of 47 individuals have been screened, of which 21 tested positive."

In Labuan, Dr Noor Hisham said another workplace-linked cluster was identified - the Jalan Mohammed Salleh cluster where 12 people have tested positive to date of the 423 people screened.

"The index case (case 154, 823) reported positive on Jan 16 after a screening for symptomatic individuals and with a history of travel from Sabah.

"The name of the cluster refers to the locality where the cases in this cluster are reported to occur at the Labuan Industrial Training Institute," he added.

In Pahang, Dr Noor Hisham said the Rantau Lada cluster was reported in Temerloh and Maran with 19 Covid-19 positive cases to date of the 58 people screened.

"The index case (case 133,326) was reported positive on Jan 9 following a screening of symptomatic individuals and with interstate travel history from Selangor.

"The name of the cluster refers to the locality of the family of the index case in Kampung Bukit Lada, Temerloh, Pahang."

In Melaka, he said the Pantai Peringgit cluster was reported in Central Melaka and Jasin.

"The index case (case 137,894) reported positive on Jan 11 as a result of symptomatic individual screening. The name of the cluster refers to the residence of the index case located at Jalan Solok Pantai Peringgit, Peringgit, Melaka.

"As of Jan 17, 128 individuals had been screened, of whom 24 tested positive."

Dr Noor Hisham added that the total number of active clusters in the country currently stood at 292.

"Of the total, 86 clusters logged new cases today. The clusters that reported the highest number of new cases are the Lebuh construction site cluster (253 cases), Rantau-Siliau cluster (96 cases) and the Jalan Harapan prison cluster (94 cases)."
