Covid-19: 1,828 new cases

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia today recorded 1,828 new Covid-19 cases with five fatalities, bringing the cumulative number of cases to 302,580.

This is the second time over the past seven days that the nation recorded below 2,000 new infections. On Feb 25, Malaysia logged 1,924 new cases.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 1,821 of today's new cases were local transmissions involving 1,058 Malaysians while seven were imported cases with three of them foreigners.

Malaysia now has 25,542 active cases with 198 patients being treated in intensive care units and 90 of them requiring the aid of a ventilator.

"Johor contributed the highest number of cases today at 490 with 453 of them from clusters and close contact screenings actively conducted on the ground.

"This is followed by Selangor with 453 cases and Sarawak with 220 cases," he said in a statement today.

He added that 113 new cases reported today were linked to prisons and the immigration detention centres' clusters.

There are 80 cases from the Tembok Tapah cluster, the Telok Mas cluster (7), the Pengkalan Chepa cluster (7), the Tembok Taiping cluster (6), the Seberang Perai Prison cluster (5), the Tembok Bendera cluster (4), the Jalan Jalan Sungai Jelok Prison cluster (3) and the Tembok Bukit Besi cluster (1).

Dr Noor Hisham said 2,486 recoveries were recorded today, taking the toll to 275,903.

On today's five fatalities, he said two of them were in Sabah, two in Kuala Lumpur and one in Melaka. The death toll now stands at 1,135.

The victims, three women and two men, aged between 32 and 81, were all Malaysians.
