Close to 50 detained for flouting SOP

KUALA LUMPUR: Close to 50 people were nabbed for flouting the movement control order's standard operating procedures (SOP) yesterday.

Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that all 44 of them were slapped with compounds.

Failure to adhere to physical distancing topped the list of offences and accounted for 39 cases.

"The other offences comprised three business operators not providing proper equipment or entry logs for patrons to record their details, one for unauthorised travelling across district and state borders, and one for not wearing face mask," he said in a statement today.

Police conducted 64,528 checks nationwide. Among the places inspected were 5,635 restaurants, 4,712 supermarkets, 3,895 banks, 2,633 hawkers, 2,408 markets, 2,182 factories, and 740 government offices.

Also inspected were 3,316 places of worship, 1,685 recreational spots, 1,407 land transport terminals, 418 water transport terminals and 153 air transport terminals.

Under Ops Benteng, seven undocumented foreigners were detained and one land vehicle and a boat were seized.

Ismail Sabri said a total of 259 roadblocks are still operating throughout the country.

Meanwhile, 89 sanitisation operations were carried out throughout the country involving 24 red zones, seven orange zones, 14 yellow zones and two green zones.

"A total of 858 individuals returned from abroad yesterday and were placed at quarantine centres."

A total of 1,357 foreign workers were screened yesterday with two confirmed positive for Covid-19, he said.

To date, 659,757 foreign workers have been screened involving 34,227 employees. 10,064 of them tested positive for Covid-19.

The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) meanwhile conducted special SOP compliance checks at 1,965 premises.
