Fishermen nabbed for using explosives to catch fish off Lahad Datu

LAHAD DATU: Two fishermen were detained for alleged involvement in fish bombing activities off Pantai Sungai Merah here.

District Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency director Commander Abdul Muhaimin Mohammad Salleh said the arrest was made about 4.30pm yesterday following a tip-off.

"Upon reaching the location, the personnel noticed an unnumbered boat with two men.

"When they were approached for inspection, the duo jumped into the sea but were caught and the pump boat was confiscated," he said in a statement, adding the undocumented suspects aged 17 and 33 were believed to be sea gypsies.

Further inspections revealed about 15 kilogrammes of fish with damaged internal organs.

The case is being investigated under Section 26 of the Fisheries Act 1985 for fishing using explosives, poison and others.

"Lahad Datu MMEA takes fish bombing activities seriously and urges those with information to call our operations centre at 089-885727."
