Health Ministry pushes 'self lockdown' as cases soar past 6,000

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians have been urged to proactively practice self-restriction or self lockdown to curb Covid-19 infections after daily cases in the country soared to 6,075 yesterday.

The call was made by Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah who pleaded to the people to stay home and abide by the Standard Operating Procedures set by the government to curb the coronavirus spread.

"The daily positive cases hit 6,075 on Wednesday, the highest since the pandemic began last year. It is hoped that the people will continue to be vigilant to protect themselves and their families from the fatal virus infection.

"Enforce self Movement Control Order or self lockdown to break the Covid-19 infection chain," said Dr Noor Hisham on his official Twitter account today.

In line with the advice, the Health Ministry, on its official Facebook and Twitter accounts last year, shared tips on what to do in the course of self-restriction which are to:

- Go to the market or shop for necessities once a week

- Fill a full tank of petrol

- Perform the five daily prayers with family members

- Optimise online shopping

- Receive no visitors

Yesterday's positive cases had raised the cumulative infections in the country to 485,496.

Selangor continued to record the highest number of cases with 2,251, Johor (699), Kuala Lumpur (660), Kelantan (441) and Sarawak (323).
