2,341 fully vaccinated healthcare workers contracted Covid-19

PUTRAJAYA: A total of 2,341 healthcare workers contracted Covid-19 despite having been fully vaccinated.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba said none of the patients however experienced severe symptoms of the infection.

"Out of the total number of healthcare workers who contracted the virus after being fully vaccinated, 778 cases were Category 1 (asymptomatic) while 1,559 cases were Category 2 (mild symptoms) patients.

"There are also two Category 3 cases (symptomatic with lung infection) and two others in Category 4 (symptomatic with lung infection and require oxygen). There are no Category 5 cases (critical patients with multiple organ complications)," said Dr Adham.

The cases, he said, were from a total of 9,932 infections involving healthcare workers since the pandemic hit the country early last year.

Dr Adham said cases involving fully vaccinated healthcare workers showed that Covid-19 vaccines are able to reduce the risk of severe infections associated with the virus.

He added 678 healthcare workers were currently being treated at hospitals.

There are also 1,812 healthcare workers currently under quarantine after coming into close contact with positive Covid-19 cases.

"The ministry will re-mobilise healthcare workers from other healthcare facilities in the absence of their colleagues who are observing quarantine," he said.

Dr Adham stressed that healthcare workers were always reminded to comply with the standard operating procedures (SOP) while performing their duties.

The ministry, he said, had also instructed heads of departments to continue monitoring SOP compliance among healthcare workers to protect them against Covid-19 infections at work.
