Govt will not extend emergency, all emergency ordinances revoked [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: Minister in Prime Minister's Department (Parliament and Law Affairs) Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said all emergency ordinances promulgated this year have been revoked since July 21.

He also said the government would not extend the current state of emergency.

Takiyuddin was responding to criticism by opposition members of parliament in the Dewan Rakyat today where they claimed that today's special sitting was unconstitutional and went against the King's decree.

In a shouting match this morning, opposition MPs had also questioned the government's decision to not allow debates on the proclamation of emergency and emergency ordinances.

The revocation of the emergency ordinances were only revealed during an exchange with Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng who had asked on the status of the ordinances.

This came as a shock for the MPs since there were no announcements made by the government and according to them, there were legal implications to the revocations.

Takiyuddin said that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Mustafa Billah Shah, had given his consent for this week's special parliament sitting to be held starting today until next Monday.

"The Agong has given his consent for the government to call for a special sitting from July 26 until Aug 2.

"Document speaks louder than words. The government decided to not advise (the Agong) to proclaim a new state of emergency after it ends on Aug 1.

"After Aug 1, all emergency ordinances will be revoked and therefore, the annulment issue raised (by opposition MPs) are no longer relevant," Takiyuddin told the House today.
