'Sultan of Melaka' dies of Covid-19

KUALA LUMPUR: A businessman, who once claimed to be the Sultan of Melaka, Noor Jan Tuah has reportedly died from Covid-19 this morning.

News of Noor Jan's death was shared by President of Pertubuhan Martabat Jalinan Muhibbah Malaysia (MJMM), Abdul Rani Kulup Abdullah, in a Facebook posting.

"Assalamualaikum. I am saddened to inform you that Tuanku Raja Noor Jan Shah has returned to Rahmatullah just now," he said in his posting.

He also expressed his condolences to the businessman's late wife, Zaidatul Mardiah Yussuf, and family members.

In the meantime, condolences from netizen on Noor Jan's demise was also pouring on social media platforms under the hashtag #covidfighter.

It is understood that the late businessman was buried at the Raudhatul Sakinah Islamic Cemetery, Taman Batu Muda here, near, here this afternoon.

Noor Jan, 64, from Taman Seri Gombak near here, had sparked controversy previously when he claimed to be Sultan of Melaka.

In 2016, Noor Jan was charged at the Air Keroh Sessions Court, Melaka with four counts of cheating and impersonating as the Sultan of Melaka at a resort in Alor Gajah.

He was charged with impersonating the Sultan of Melaka by holding a ceremony to award medals and unrecognised degrees to four men aged 35 to 66 years.

The offence was committed in a ceremony at A'Famosa Resort Melaka, Alor Gajah, on December 28, 2013, and he was charged under Section 419 of the Penal Code for cheating.

In July 2018, the Air Keroh Sessions Court acquitted and released Noor Jan of four charges of cheating and impersonation.

Following that, the prosecution filed an appeal, but in April 2019, the Melaka High Court upheld the Sessions Court's decision to release and acquit Noor Jan.

The decision was reached following the failure of the prosecution to raise reasonable doubts against the accused on the four charges.
