Search for missing flood victims continues

YAN: Search and rescue (SAR) operations for two victims still missing in the upstream water rush phenomenon in the Gunung Jerai area are still ongoing.

The focus is on the Titi Hayun and Batu Hampar areas.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said the SAR involved 430 personnel from various agencies, namely the police, the Fire and Rescue Department, and the Civil Defence Force among others.

"We should not say we haven't found the bodies, as there is a possibility they may be found alive. Therefore, the SAR is still ongoing.

"At the same time, we urge those with any information to inform us, to help with the SAR," he told a press conference at the Yan district police headquarters today.

Present were Kedah police chief Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat and Yan district police chief DSP Shahnaz Akhtar Haji.

Mazlan said the assets being dispatched in the SAR were sufficient, along with the number of personnel.

"This involves the use of drone units, helicopters, K-9 unit and boats.

"We also received assistance from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency and the marine police.

"The SAR which is into its fifth day today is still focused in the Titi Hayun area as a construction worker went missing here, while the bed belonging to the second victim, a former imam, was found in Batu Hampar," he said.

Mazlan said additional assets will be deployed according to needs.

On Wednesday, a water surge phenomenon occurred in Gunung Jerai causing floods that affected about 1,000 houses in Yan and Kuala Muda, leaving four victims dead.

The four were Ahmad Din, 68; Shahruzi Mohamad, 53; Zainol Morad, 66; and Mohamad Faizal Mohd Zohir, 28.
