35 new Covid-19 clusters, majority from workplace

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry has detected 35 new Covid-19 clusters in the last 24 hours.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement today said 20 of the new clusters were linked to workplace, 11 were community clusters, two high-risk groups and two from education.

He said 916 cases came from the new workplace clusters, followed by community clusters (276), high-risk groups (88) and education (28).

The workplace cluster with the highest number of Covid-19 cases is the Jalan Tasek Mutiara Tuju construction site cluster, in Penang, with 123 cases so far.

"The cluster involves workers at the construction site at Seberang Perai Selatan and the index cases is a 33-year-old Bangladeshi who tested positive on Sept 6.

"Subsequently, 518 individuals have been screened and 47 confirmed positive in the last 24 hours," Dr Noor Hisham said in a statement today.

The Jalan Sutera Bakar Batu cluster in Johor is the largest community cluster reported today, with 116 cases from 193 screened individuals.

Meanwhile, the Jalan Chemor Estate high-risk group cluster recorded 75 cases from 97 tested individuals.

"The cluster involves staff and residents of a care and rehabilitation centre at Kampung Pisang, Ipoh, Perak. A 44-year-old Malaysian who was the index case was confirmed positive on Aug 29," said Dr Noor Hisham.

He said a 2-year-old child was reportedly behind the emergence of the Jalan Scientex 20 education cluster in Kulai, Johor.

From this, 11 confirmed cases were recorded from 48 staff and students tested, he added.

A total of 4,995 Covid-19 clusters have been reported since pandemic began, with active clusters currently standing at 1,459.
