Floods and landslides keep Sabah Wildlife officers busy

PENAMPANG: Sabah Wildlife Department personnel have been working around the clock following the continuous heavy rain and yesterday's landslide.

Sabah Wildlife assistant director Dr Sen Nathan said the disasters had severely affected the wildlife holding areas in Kampung Potuki.

"Some of the slopes at our rescue centre failed and severely damaged our wildlife holding areas.

"So, we need to 'translocate' the animals to safer facilities," he said, adding that due to the damage, the unit might be delayed in responding to calls from the public.

Sen added that there were a number of calls seeking help to catch wildlife at their places, including in Kampung Nagapas where a huge crocodile was spotted on the main road and a snake found slithering into a house.

Meanwhile, the number of flood evacuees has dropped to 24 from 34 this morning.

The incessant rain yesterday had affected Penampang, Putatan and Kota Kinabalu.

Last night, three people were killed, including an 8-month-old baby while another was rescued at the Forest Hill landslide here.

The authorities also rescued a disabled man in Kampung Kudou, 61-year-old Chong Chee Sen, preventing him from being swept away.
