Committee to address children cyberbullying on social media

PUTRAJAYA: A committee under Women, Family and Community Development Ministry has been tasked with addressing cyberbullying and sexual crimes involving children on social media.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Rina Mohd Harun said the committee, Integrated Action Comittee on the Management of Children's Issues Online, was established in June 15 with 15 members.

"In this digital age, gadgets are our children's best friend. As prevention and safety measures for our children from cyberbullying and sexual crimes, this taskforce has been formed," she said.

"The task force comprises various governmental agencies; experts from private sector and non-governmental activists to discuss advocacy measures and suitable intervention steps.

"This is also in line with the country's commitment to Article 34 namely Sexual Exploitation under the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which clearly states that the government must protect children from any form of sexual exploitation and abuse".

She said this at a press conference after launching the National Children's Day 2021 at the ministry's Dewan Nur here today.

Rina said the ministry would continue to implement advocacy programmes to combat child sexual crimes via social media and short videos.

"This serves a preventive measure to create awareness among parents, family members and the community to protect children from irresponsible parties or individuals," she said.

On another matter, Rina said the ministry was processing the birth certificates for 162 stateless children to allow them to continue studies in the public education system.
