134 VOC cases from Oct 7-19

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry has identified 134 Covid-19 cases linked to variants of concern (VOC) in the country between Oct 7 and 19.

The ministry, in a tweet, said the Delta variant accounted for 132 cases while the Beta variant contributed another two cases.

"Continuous genome sequencing by the consortium has detected another 134 Covid-19 cases with VOC, that comprises 132 Delta variant cases and two Beta variant cases," read the tweet.

Johor accounted for the highest number of infections caused by the Delta variant with 43 cases logged between Oct 7 and Oct 19.

Within the same period, Negri Sembilan clocked 18 Delta variant cases, followed by Melaka (15), Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Sabah (13 each), Penang (six cases), Pahang (four cases), Sarawak (two cases) and one case each in Kelantan, Kedah, Terengganu, Putrajaya and Perlis.

Both the Beta variant cases were detected in Pahang.

Malaysia registered 5,516 new Covid-19 infections along with four new clusters as of noon today.

The country's cumulative number of cases currently stands at 2,407,382.
