All 42 Malaysians in Sudan safe amid military takeover

KUALA LUMPUR: All 42 Malaysian nationals registered with the Embassy of Malaysia in Khartoum are safe amid the political upheaval in Sudan.

Wisma Putra, in a statement today, said the embassy officials were in close contact with the Malaysian citizens in Sudan following a military takeover in the African country.

"Notwithstanding the developing situation in Sudan, the Foreign Affairs Ministry will continue to undertake efforts to safeguard Malaysia's interest in that country, including the Petronas Sudan Complex, which also houses the Embassy of Malaysia and Agencies of the United Nations and international organisations.

"As a matter of urgency, the above matters and concern on the safety of Malaysians in Sudan were conveyed to the Sudanese Charge d' Affaires, who was summoned to Wisma Putra this afternoon," read the statement.

On Monday, Sudan's military arrested Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and moved him to an undisclosed location after refusing to state support of the military takeover.

Sudan was plunged into a power struggle after former President Omar al-Bashir who ruled the country with an iron fist for three decades, was toppled in April 2019.

The recent takeover comes after weeks of tension and power tussle between Sudan's civilian and military leaders.

Besides Hamdok, the armed forces also detained other senior officials in his administration, disrupted Internet access and blocked main roads and bridges in the country.

Mass protests erupted in the streets of Khartoum – the country's capital – and its twin city of Omdurman as protesters blocked the streets and set car tyres on fire.

Sudan's military head General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan has announced the dissolution of the government and declared a state of emergency in the country.

Wisma Putra has advised Malaysians requiring consular assistance in Sudan to contact the Embassy of Malaysia in Khartoum at +249 99 070 0350 or email to mwkhartoum@kln.gov.my or to reach out via the embassy's social media.

They can also reach out to Wisma Putra at 03-88874201 / 4530 (during office hours) or 03-88874570 (after office hours).
