New Covid-19 cases dip below 5,000 again

KUALA LUMPUR: Daily Covid-19 cases dipped below the 5,000 mark for the fourth consecutive day today.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said Malaysia logged 4,543 cases, bringing the cumulative number of Covid-19 infections to 2,510,852.

He said 4,528 of the cases are from local infections, while 15 are imported.

"4,431 cases were in Categories 1 and 2, while only 112 were in Categories 3, 4 and 5," he said in a statement today.

Recoveries yet again outnumbered new Covid-19 cases as Malaysia registered 7,348 recoveries over the last 24 hours.

A total of 534 patients are in the Intensive Care Units (ICU), with 529 cases confirmed to be Covid-19-related, while five others are classified as "probable" and still being investigated.

There are currently 263 patients requiring ventilator support.

Malaysia recorded 35 deaths due to Covid-19 yesterday, bringing the national death toll to 29,295.

Based on data shared on CovidNow and GitHub, five of the total fatalities were brought-in-dead (BID) cases.

A majority of the deaths were reported in Sarawak and Johor with six deaths each followed by Perak and Terengganu with five deaths each.

Kelantan and Pahang reported four deaths, Penang and Sabah (2), and Negri Sembilan (1).

Dr Noor Hisham said six new Covid-19 clusters were also detected.

Three of the clusters are workplace related in Kedah, Kelantan and Johor which contributed to a total of 65 cases so far.

Two other education clusters were also detected in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya together with one detention centre in Selangor, he said.

A total of 5,812 Covid-19 clusters have been detected since the pandemic began last year, with 314 active clusters.

The country's Covid-19 R-naught (Rt) rate was recorded at 0.92 yesterday.

States with Rt 1.0 and over are Kuala Lumpur (1.0), and Putrajaya (1.03).

The other states have an Rt of between 0.99 and 0.83 while Labuan has 14 cases without any Rt figure.
