4,879 new Covid-19 cases

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia recorded an increase in Covid-19 infections today with 4,879 cases compared to 4,087 yesterday.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement said this raised the cumulative number of nationwide coronavirus cases to 2,632,782.

"Of the total cases reported today, 79 cases or 1.6 per cent are in Category 3, 4 and 5, whereas 4,800 patients or 98.4 per cent of the infected are in Category 1 and 2.

"There are 24 import cases involving 16 Malaysians and eight foreigners. Local transmission cases were at 4,855 involving 4,678 locals and 177 foreigners," he said.

At present, said Dr Noor Hisham, there are 509 cases being treated in intensive care units nationwide.

"Of the total, 394 are confirmed Covid-19 cases and 115 are suspected, probable and currently under investigation.

He said 172 of the ICU patients who needed ventilation aid were confirmed Covid-19 cases, while 80 cases that are currently intubated are still under investigation for the coronavirus.

Dr Noor Hisham said nine new Covid-19 clusters had been detected today, bringing the total number of active clusters in the country to 231.

As of today, the country's Covid-19 infectivity rate (Rt) stood at 0.95. Labuan reported the highest Rt value at 1.12 followed by Perlis (1.03).

Other states with an Rt value of 1.0 are Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Pahang, Kedah, Perak and Penang.

States with Rt value under 1.0 are Putrajaya and Selangor (0.99), Johor (0.98), Sabah and Kelantan (0.96), Terengganu (0.95), Negri Sembilan (0.92) and Sarawak at 0.78.

Dr Noor Hisham also said 5,168 people had recovered today, bringing the total number of recoveries to 2,537,204.
