Rantau Panjang folks ready to face second wave of flood

RANTAU PANJANG: Residents living in the low-lying areas here and other districts are ready to face a second wave of flood following the latest forecast from The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

Majority of the villagers, particularly those staying along the Golok river, have made the necessary preparations to face the yearly monsoon season.

Odd-job worker Rosli Nordin said his family had been on high alert after learning about the latest forecast.

"During the first wave last month, we did not move to the flood relief centre as our area was spared from being inundated.

"After we were informed on the possibility of series of flooding from this month to next March, we have to be vigilant and prep for it," he said.

The 27-year-old from Kampung Rantau Panjang said he and his family would seek refuge at the SK Gual Tinggi relief centre whenever flood hit their home.

Villager Kamarudin Setapa, 54, said many houses located along the Golok river would be flooded when the river overflows its bank following heavy rains.

"We have packed our belongings when the first wave hit certain areas, but luckily we have been spared so far.

"Upon seeing the weather today (non-stop heavy rains since this morning), our luck may run out and the village may be inundated," said the father of four from Kampung Tok Deh.

Kelantan experienced first round of flood end of last month, forcing more than 30 people to be evacuated.

It was reported that several areas in Kelantan, Pahang and Johor as well as the whole of Terengganu would experience heavy rainfall today and tomorrow.

MetMalaysia has issued a warning today, saying that strong winds from the north east direction could potentially lead to continuous rainfall and cause floods in low-lying areas.

The department said nine districts in Kelantan - namely Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Baru, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Bachok, Machang, Pasir Puteh and Kuala Krai - and the whole of Terengganu have been placed on high alert.
