Disabled woman and family in Rantau Panjang thankful for flood rescuers

DUNGUN: It was a harrowing experience for a woman with disabilities when water quickly flooded her family home in Kampung Bukit Gedup, Pelandang here yesterday.

Zainiah Muda, 50, could only watch helpless as he is unable to walk without assistance.

As the house became flooded on Thursday, her family members were scrambling to evacuate, but could not do so due to the impassable roads around them.

Zainiah's sister Maziatul Asma Muda, 37, said it was a distressing situation but they sought help from Civil Defence Force (APM) to rescue the family including Zainiah.

She explained that Zainiah, the third of six siblings and a person with a learning disability since birth, relies on her siblings for mobility.

"The water entered the house swiftly, causing us distress. We had to consider not only my sister but also our mother Zainab Mohamad, 76, who is also unwell.

"The rain persisted since 11pm on Thursday. The Civil Defence Force came to our rescue at 8am the following day.

"Both my mother and sister were evacuated on a boat before being sent to the temporary relief centre at SK Pulai Serai."

When asked if she was ready to return home as some areas saw the floods subsiding, Maziatul Asma said she was reluctant to do so now.

She said her family would wait until the weather improves , fearing a potential resurgence of rain which may prompt another evacuation to the relief centre.

"Also, the beds at our home are submerged in flood water. It's impractical for us to sleep there.

"There is stagnant flood waters around our house given its proximity to a river which is 100m away meters," she said.

Another flood victim, Ahmad Faizzun Arman, 20, said it was his first experience being relocated due to the flood.

Despite residing in Kampung Pelandang for over 10 years, he has never needed to seek refuge in a relief centre, even during prior floods.

"This marks the first time flood waters entered our house. It rose to knee-level and at an unexpected rate. Heavy rain and the overflowing river led to floods and it prompted my family to relocate to the relief centre for the first time," he said.
