Sarawak polls: Only top party leaders can travel interstate for campaigning

KUALA LUMPUR: Only five top party leaders contesting in the 12th Sarawak Election are allowed to travel interstate for the purpose of campaigning throughout the state polls.

According to the Covid-19 prevention standard operating procedures (SOP) for the implementation of the Sarawak Election released by the Election Commission (EC) today, the names of the political leaders must be submitted to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

"Entry into Sarawak is subjected to the SOP being enforced and that is limited to activities approved in the enterSarawak application," read the SOP.

Prior to the release of the SOP, Sarawak police hinted that there may be slight changes to the SOP during campaigning for the state election which begins after nominations tomorrow.

Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Aidi Ismail had said that among matters being deliberated included issues related to Internet coverage in Sarawak should the National Security Council stick with similar SOP during the Melaka state polls.
