Klang floods expected to worsen due to high tide phenomenon

KUALA LUMPUR: The high tide phenomenon expected to occur at 5pm this evening in Port Klang is feared will worsen the flood situation in Klang and Port Klang.

A Malaysian Meteorological spokesman (MET Malaysia) said a four-meter high tide was expected to hit the area.

"The rain in Klang is expected to continue until tomorrow, but the possibility of floods will worsen due to the high tide at five this afternoon in Port Klang.

"If the rain continues, the water from land cannot go out to the sea. Due to that, (possibly) in areas in Klang, the floods will not recede and there is a possibility that it will get worse," he told BH today.

He said that members of the public, especially Klang residents were urged to take precautions following the bad weather warning issued today.

"People need to check the latest information that MET Malaysia updates on its website, besides following instructions from the authorities," he said.

It was reported that a total of 1,011 flood victims have been temporarily placed at three Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) in Klang as of 7am, after floods struck several areas in the district.

Yesterday, a total of 20 areas in Klang were struck by flash floods following continuous heavy rain, Telok Gong was among the most affected by the inundation which had reached up to waist level.

Other flood affected areas are Pulau Indah, Pandamaran, Bandar Botanik, Telok Gadong, Bandar Sultan Suleiman and Bukit Tinggi.
