RM1 million to upgrade Tawau Hills park

TAWAU: Sabah has allocated RM1 million under the 12th Malaysia Plan to improve the basic facilities in Tawau Hills Park.

The upgrading works kicked off in 2021 and is expected to be completed next month, said state Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin during a working visit to the park here yesterday.

Now that the state is focusing on reviving tourism activities, he said the park should focus on giving the best services and facilities as Tawau Hills is a popular spot for locals around the district.

To date, the federal government has funded two projects to upgrade the basic facilities which was the pedestrian walkway to the waterfall costing RM172,286 and repairing the Table waterfall viewing platform (RM183,386).

"After upgrading the facilities, the ministry's next move is to enhance the promotional effort to attract more tourists to enjoy the uniqueness of Tawau Hills," he said.

Jafry also visited Batu Bersusun Balung Cocos which has the potential to be developed into a community-based tourism product.

The rocks appear to be arranged and stacked on the ground, but in fact this was caused by natural processes from a volcanic eruption.

It is situated at an altitude of 1,182m above sea level, about 24km north of Tawau City.
