Three new Covid-19 education clusters in Kedah

ALOR STAR: Three more schools in Kedah recorded Covid-19 outbreaks yesterday, bringing the total active education clusters in the state to six with 253 students tested positive with the virus.

State Health Department director Dr Othman Warijo said the three new clusters were Dah Padang Halban, Dah Sungai Kob and Dah Sungai Limau.

He said the Dah Halban cluster was declared after 25 students at SMK Changlun in Kubang Pasu were tested positive while the Dah Sungai Kob was declared after 37 positive cases were reported at SMK Sungai Kob in Kulim.

"Dah Sungai Limau cluster was declared after 27 students of Saadah Al-Diniyah Al-Islamiah religious school in Yan were tested positive with the virus," he said when contacted.

Dr Othman added that nine more students at Maktab Mahmud in Pendang were tested positive, bringing the total number of students infected with Covid-19 to 108.

As for the other two education clusters - Dah Jalan Pantai in SMK Kota Kuala Muda, Sungai Petani the number of infected students remained at 33 while in Dah Teluk Teduri, Baling MRSM, the number of students tested positive stood at 23.

"All the schools have been ordered to close for a week for sanitisation works and we will advise accordingly on the reopening dates based on risk assessment reports later," he said.

Yesterday, state Health and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Dr Mohd Hayati Othman said three education clusters were declared in Kedah after 155 students from three schools were tested positive of Covid-19.

All the infections involved students staying in the schools' hostels.
