Physical sports, co-curricular activities allowed in schools from March 21 for fully-vaccinated

KUALA LUMPUR: Physical sports and co-curricular activities in school compound will be allowed starting Monday, Senior Education Minister Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin said.

Radzi stressed that teachers, students and coaches involved in these activities must be fully vaccinated.

"The Education Ministry had made several improvements on the implementation of sports and co-curricular activities under the School Management and Operation Guidelines 3.0.

"This includes allowing solo or group sports and co-curricular activities in school compounds. The Annex regarding the matter can be found at https://www.moe.gov.my/muat-turun/kenyataan-media/km2022/5084-annex-suka...," he said in a statement tonight.

Radzi emphasised that all sports and co-curricular activities in schools must adhere to the standard operating procedures (SOP) set by the Health Ministry and National Security Council.

He also said sports tournaments within the school compound would be allowed.

"But only teachers, coaches and students from the involved school will be allowed to participate.

"Sports activities and co-curricular activities that involve external parties will need the approval of the Education Ministry.

"The ministry has the prerogative to cancel the events if the organisers are found violating the SOP," he said.

Radzi said the new ruling would also apply to all private institutions registered under the Education Ministry, including those under the schools and centres categories.

He also urged institutions that were not registered under the ministry to adhere to the same SOP.

The ministry had banned all sports and co-curricular activities, including gatherings in schools, since June 10 in the midst of Covid-19 pandemic.
