Wrong document making rounds on social media, UiTM says wait for official word

KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) today refuted a statement that has been making its rounds on social media.

A spokesman from the university's Communications Department said several news portals have referred to "the wrong document" citing "incorrect information" concerning UiTM's handling of the issue involving a lecturer and an underprivileged student.

"The wrong document was referred to, and it was not an official or public document.

"Please hold off until the official statement is released. As of this hour, we have not made any official announcements in this regard.

"Investigation is still ongoing," the spokesman told the New Straits Times.

Several news portals earlier reported that the university has come to a conclusion and was considering two responses to the incident.

The NST also learnt that UiTM has lodged a police report over a leaked internal probe document, which made public students' private details.

Additionally, the document revealed the supposed findings of the university's internal investigation into the matter.

This, the spokesperson said was uncalled for and the university has acted on the mater.

The spokesperson further said investigation into the incident is still ongoing, hence urged patience from the media and members of the public.

"The document is not official nor final (and not public). As mentioned earlier, investigation is still ongoing and we are waiting for the top management's meeting with the legal advisor's office."

A screenshot of the page has been making its rounds on Twitter, Facebook and Whatsapp.

The controversy started following a nearly two-minute-long video of an online class that was shared on social media.

The lecturer in the video had questioned a student on why he did not own a computer, despite already being in his fifth semester.

The lecturer also allegedly touched on students being in the bottom-40 (B40) group, and questioned the financial abilities of the student and his family.

UiTM vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Roziah Mohd Janor in a statement yesterday said the university has taken action against the lecturer.

Roziah also advised any UiTM students facing issues to contact their faculties or the university to obtain appropriate advice and help to continue their studies.
