Brightest 'supermoon' over Malaysian skies tonight

KUALA LUMPUR: Stargazers, take note!

Tonight, the first supermoon of this year's summer season will appear at its biggest and brightest over Malaysian skies.

The supermoon, also known as the Strawberry Moon, is expected to peak at 7.51pm today.

Double treat of celestial phenomena this year

Although this is only the second supermoon of the year, it will be the first one that Malaysians can get a glimpse of.

The first "super blood moon" of this year that resulted from a total lunar eclipse on May 16 could not be sighted in Malaysia.

This phenomenon was only visible in certain parts of Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas.

A supermoon occurs when the moon is at its closest position to Earth (perigree) while at the same time, appearing as a full moon.

Supermoons only occur three to four times a year, and always appear consecutively.

According to the National Planetarium's astronomical calendar for 2022, the three supermoons for the summer season will appear on June 14, July 14 and Aug 12.
