Education Ministry to review school syllabus this year

PUTRAJAYA: Senior Education Minister Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin said 2022 will be a busy year for the ministry as it will review the syllabus taught in schools.

He said that Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Menengah (KSSM) had completed its first cohort cycle last year while the Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Rendah (KSSR) first cohort cycle will conclude later this year.

He said it was part of the education framework to review the syllabus once the cohort cycle has been completed.

"The review is to see if there is any room for improvement," he said at a press conference today.

Radzi was asked to comment on a viral social media posting which claimed that the Standard One Mathematics syllabus seemed "too advanced" for the students.

He said the ministry will also look into the matter during the review to distinguish whether the syllabus in the current cohort is deemed "complex" or if it is merely something not familiar.

He said that if the syllabus was generally "not complex" but instead was something that the students were not familiar with, then it would indeed seem complex.

However, he said the syllabus was widely used in foreign countries.

"I have gone through the Standard One text book… this is not new," he added.

Meanwhile, he said that the ministry has no intention to do away with the mandatory requirement to pass the History subject for the SPM examination.

This comes after about 70,000 of the SPM 2021 candidates failed the subject.

"We have no plans to review this, but we will look into the factors that contributed to students failing the subject," he said.
