CHUKAI: The Road Transport Department (RTD) recorded 55,000 offences involving vehicles driven by those without a valid driver's license in the first five months of this year.
RTD's Deputy Director -General (Planning and Operations), Aedly Fadly Ramli, said most of the offences involved parents allowing their underage children to drive without a license.
I am disappointed with the attitude of some people who continued to commit the wrongdoing without considering the risks and dangers posed to other road users, he said.
"When it comes to enforcement personnel, they give all kinds of excuses.
"Based on the latest analysis and observation from the RTD, we found that there has been no significant change involving vehicle owners on the matter over the last four years," he said.
Aedly Fadli told this to reporters after taking part in an integrated operation on commercial and trade vehicles at the Kijal enforcement station, near here, last night.
Also present were Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Henry Sum and Terengganu RTD Director Zulkarnain Yasin.
Aedly Fadli added that 347,300 offences were also committed by those driving vehicles without a driver's license from January 2009 to May this year.
"Any owner who defaults may be subject to Section 26 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which can be fined not less than RM300 and not more than RM3,000 or imprisonment for a maximum three months or both.
He said he would also not hesitate to take more serious action by seizing vehicles under Section 64 (1) of the same act.
Meanwhile, Aedly said the integrated operation which involved agencies such as the immigration department and the National Anti -Drug Agency saw 580 vehicles inspected and 133 vehicle owners given summons for various offences, including expired driver's license and having no license.
