Raya Haji exodus begins with traffic flow build-up at major highways

KUALA LUMPUR: Traffic flow along several major highways nationwide is expected to increase significantly this evening as people begin the long trek to their hometowns ahead of the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration this weekend.

Traffic along the North-South Expressway (Plus), Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway (KLK) and East Coast Expressway 1 (LPT 1) as of this afternoon was smooth and under control.

However, Plus Operational Excellence head, Mohd Yusuf Abdul Aziz, said traffic was expected to pick up after Friday prayers.

"We expect the number of vehicles to increase this evening after Friday prayers. The number of vehicles using the Plus Highway to the north and south are expected to increase to 1.9 million vehicles today compared with 1.6 million vehicles," he told the New Straits Times Press.

He urged highway users to and from the Klang Valley to follow the designated travel times to ensure smooth traffic flow during the festive period.

Under the travel guidelines, those planning to drive to Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak (north) and Johor from July 7 to 10 are advised to begin their journey before 10am. Those heading for other states are advised to travel after 1pm.

As for the return journey to the Klang Valley from July 10 to 12, travellers are advised to start their journey before 9am.

Meanwhile, ANIH Bhd, which maintains the KLK and LPT 1, said the number of vehicles along its highways began increasing this afternoon and is expected to surge even higher this evening.

ANIH Bhd senior general manager, Radzimah Mohd Radzi, said traffic along KLK-Karak had begun slowing down before the Gombak toll plaza heading towards the East Coast.

Congestion has also been reported at KM31.6 to KM37.2 towards Gombak and Genting Sempah.

"However, traffic flow at LPT 1 remains smooth in both directions so far. We expect the number of vehicles heading to the East Coast to increase this evening," she said.
