Penang Mufti calls for shutting down of TTDI comedy club

GEORGE TOWN: More quarters have voiced support over the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL)'s decision to suspend the operations of a comedy club in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) here.

The latest is Penang Mufti Datuk Seri Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor.

Wan Salim's call came a day after he said certain guidelines needed to be enforced by the authorities to ensure comedy club owners and patrons do not cross moral and religious boundaries.

"My earlier statement seemed soft against the comedy club, as I thought it was something unintentional.

"But after knowing a similar incident had happened repeatedly in the past, it is understandable that it is purposely planned to insult Islam.

"I support DBKL's stern action against the comedy club due to the seriousness of the offence, which can affect the country's stability," he said today.

Wan Salim said the comedy club should be shut down at all costs to serve as a lesson to everyone out there.

The comedy club's operation had been suspended as authorities probed a viral video of a woman who was believed to be intentionally insulted the sanctity of Islam.

A 54-second video clip went viral on social media, showing a woman who first claimed she had memorised 15 juzuk (chapters) of the Al-Quran, then discarded her tudung and baju kurung during her open MIC routine on stage.

She was wearing a spaghetti-strap dress underneath the attire.

The case had sparked reactions from the authorities and the public.

The woman has since been charged in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court with insulting Islam.

It was later revealed that the comedy club only had a restaurant licence and not an entertainment licence.
