Trailer carrying sardine cans overturns on North-South Expressway

KUALA KANGSAR: A trailer transporting sardine cans overturned at KM265.9 of the North-South Expressway (southbound) here, causing a traffic congestion that stretched as far as five kilometres.

Kuala Kangsar district police chief Assistant Commissioner Omar Bakhtiar Yaacob said the accident occurred at 1pm after the trailer was said to have lost control and overturned.

"Thousands of sardine cans were scattered along the stretch which was then closed for all vehicles.

"Road users from the north were diverted out to the Kuala Kangsar Toll Plaza for cleaning work to be carried out," he said when contacted.

Omar said policemen had been stationed at the scene to help control traffic flow and avoid further congestion.

"All vehicles have been directed to use an alternative route from the Kuala Kangsar Toll to Sungai Siput to get to Ipoh," he said.

Meanwhile, Twitter @Plustrafik in its tweet said that the contra route has been opened at KM267.0 to 265.1 in the north direction to reduce congestion.

In a 43-second video shared on social media, thousands of sardine cans were seen scattered on the road.

Some parts of the road also turned red, believed to be from the sardine cans that were smashed in the incident.
