Draft KL City Plan 2040 takes into account climate challenges - Mayor

KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur City (Local) Plan 2040 that is currently being drafted will take into account climate change and mitigation efforts including a sustainable drainage system.

Mayor Datuk Seri Datuk Seri Mahadi Che Ngah said a study for the draft plan was expected to conclude in November.

"We have placed climate change as a priority. Whatever we do, we will first think about the extent of development impact. Any new development will incorporate this aspect and offer solutions (to address climate challenges).

"We are making specific preparations on drain capacity in facing the increasing rainfall as we found that the intensity is now much higher, based on the data we collected so far," he told reporters after attending Kuala Lumpur City Hall's media appreciation dinner last night.

The data served as guidance for the local government in ensuring that there would no longer be clogged drains that contributed to flash floods due to water ponding during heavy rains, he said.

He said City Hall had been working closely with Alam Flora Sdn Bhd and Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) to certify drainage areas that had been cleared.

"Certificates will be issued for all the drains inspected and cleaned in ensuring that there will not be obstruction to water flow such as debris and garbage.

He said an announcement on the public hearing would be made in the media to invite KLites to voice their opinions and suggestions on the plan.

On the proposed underground water storage, he said the study on the long-term flash flood mitigation measure would be completed by December or January.

He said the local plan would also address the lack of parking facilities at public transportation stations in the city.
