Federal govt supports proposal to gazette Kampung Laut mosque as Unesco World Heritage Site

TUMPAT: The Federal Government will support Kelantan's proposal to gazette Kampung Laut Mosque as a World Heritage Site under the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the federal government also welcomes the proposal to gazette the mosque as a national monument under the National Heritage Department.

"Kampung Laut Mosque is unique as it was entirely constructed from cengal wood and without a single nail.

"I believe the proposal to recognise the mosque for its history and cultural significance under the National Heritage Department and Unesco will elevate its heritage status.

"The Federal government believes the proposal is very significant for the mosque and our country," he said at the launch of Kampung Laut Heritage Village here today.

Following huge floods in 1926 and 1966, the mosque previously found a new home in Nilam Puri, some 20km away.

"I am happy that after more than 50 years, the mosque has returned to its original location," he said.

He added the Federal government had spent about RM40 million for Kampung Laut redevelopment project.

"The government hopes the project that includes the Laman Warisan Serunding (popular traditional meat floss) will provide an opportunity for local entrepreneurs to market their products," he added.
