NGO hands memo against GEG to MPs

KUALA LUMPUR: A non-governmental organisation that safeguards businesses from criminal conduct today handed over a memorandum on the tobacco generational endgame (GEG) to several members of parliament.

In the memo, the Retail and Trade Brand Advocacy Malaysia Chapter (RTBA Malaysia) said the GEG policy was not a pragmatic solution to reducing the prevalence of smoking in Malaysia.

Among the MPs handed the memo by the were Masjid Tanah's Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin, who is a member of the Parliamentary Special Select Committee responsible for reviewing the Control of Tobacco and Smoking Products Bill 2022.

RTBA Malaysia managing director Datuk Fazli Nordin said: "As an association that protects brands, we believe we have a significant role to play in sharing the concerns of Malaysian businesses on issues pertinent to the industry.

"Our objective in handing over the memorandum is to ensure that parliamentarians are aware of the views of Malaysian citizens on the bill and GEG policy.

"Part of our submission includes a petition by 'Malaysia Bersuara' that has garnered over 760,000 signatures. This is a substantial figure which shows that the GEG policy is not seen as a pragmatic solution to reduce smoking prevalence."
