Family of seven evacuated in Tanjong Kajang floods

TANJONG KARANG: A family of seven was evacuated by the fire and rescue department here after their house was hit by floods.

Selangor fire and rescue department director Norazam Khamis said the victims were relocated to a relative's house after the area was flooded to a depth of about 0.5m.

Norazam said the flood occurred due to a burst bund which led a nearby river to overflow.

"The fire department received a call about the incident at 4.07am. A team of eight members along with machinery from the Tanjong Karang Fire and Rescue Station were sent to the scene of the incident.

"Initially, the river water from the burst bund had overflowed around the town of Tanjong Karang but it did not affect residential areas.

"However, at 5.24am, the fire brigade found that the water had risen to a level of one meter in the Tanjong Karang Public Market area," he said when contacted today.

Norazam said the fire and rescue department then carried out two evacuations involving a family of seven, including an elderly woman.

"The victims consisted of four men and three women. All of them were moved to an area that was not flooded which is Jalan Kilang Padi.

"At 6.13am, it was found that the water had begun to recede."

Norazam said this was the third time the floods were caused by a burst bund here.

On Oct 11, it was reported that two bunds had been damaged in Pekan Tanjong Karang and Jalan Masjid Baroh.
