LRT service could resume earlier, root cause rectified, says Wee

KUALA LUMPUR: The light rail transit (LRT) operations along the Kelana Jaya line could resume earlier than expected, after a full-day test is conducted, once the modem and power supply for the tracks have been replaced.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said the root cause of the malfunction had been rectified, but the service of the track would need to be tested tomorrow.

"We will make a decision tomorrow if everything (the test) runs smoothly. The decision will be made based on the original equipment manufacturer's (OEM) assessment confirming that the trains are safe to use.

"Meanwhile, the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) will be given the authority to approve and make a final inspection to determine whether or not the trains are safe to be used," he said.

He mentioned that the full-day test tomorrow will be conducted without passengers.

Wee added that two other malfunctions on the tracks were detected during an inspection conducted by the Thales Group OEM from Toronto yesterday which included its vehicle control centre (VCC) and signalling managing centre (SMC).

"There was a malfunction at one of the VCC. Due to this, we could not see the train's direction from the system.

"The Thales Group OEM from Toronto had closely followed the inspection virtually and conducted tests for any troubleshooting on the tracks.

"The LRT system was originally designed by them and the use of their diagnostic tools has proven that the change of these components are stable and can be run smoothly," he said.

On Monday, RapidKL announced that its LRT services between the Kelana Jaya and Ampang Jaya stations were halted for safety purposes, after a malfunction in its automatic train control (ATC) system was detected.

Following the malfunction, a total of 16 stations along the Kelana Jaya line were closed and suspended from operating from Nov 9 to Nov 15.

The LRT stations involved include Kelana Jaya; Taman Bahagia; Taman Paramount; Asia Jaya; Taman Jaya; Universiti; Kerinchi; Bangsar; Abdullah Hukum; KL Sentral; Pasar Seni; Masjid Jamek; Dang Wangi; Kampung Baru; KLCC and Ampang Park.

He added that Rapid Rail had conducted another test last night involving 24 trains on the Kelana Jaya line, from Gombak to Putra Heights, which showed stable and positive results.

"We will have another round of testing tonight in case of any hiccups or system disruption before commencing the full-day test.

"Prasarana will also announce if the operations will be resumed a day earlier to passengers who use the service.

"We understand that it is a sudden and major decision to suspend the operations. However, it needs to be done for the safety of the public," he said.
