Home Ministry yet to receive report on MySPR data leak

ARAU: The Home Ministry has yet to receive any report regarding the leak of 800,000 voter data allegedly obtained from the MySPR system.

Caretaker Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin also said so far no quarter has admitted to receiving such data.

"So far no police report has been made and if there is, we will investigate this issue.

"However, what I want to emphasise here is that the data obtained from the Election Commission (EC) is only the name and ID (identity) number and if it comes with the phone number, this means it is a form of fraud," he said.

He told this to reporters after delivering a ceremah as part of the 'Jelajah Perikatan Nasional' programme in Perlis, in Guar Sanji, here today.

Present was Arau Parliament seat candidate for PN, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, Perlis PN Chairman, Shukri Ramli, Perlis PN 1st Vice Chairman, Abu Bakar Hamzah as well as Perlis PN leadership and election candidates.

Yesterday, the lowyat.net website revealed it had spotted the sale of the data involving voters.

The website also found a sample of alleged personal details such as full names, identification numbers, email addresses, birth dates and home addresses being made public.

The data sample made public also included photos, voting centre of voters, as well as other EC information.

The seller is seeking US$2,000 (RM9,401) to be paid in Bitcoin or Monero cryptocurrencies for the possession of the full electoral roll and the details involving 22 million voters.

It is alleged that the data was obtained from EC's MySPR website, where all details of Malaysians aged 18 and above and eligible to vote are stored.
