MCMC warns public not to raise sensitive issues

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) warned the public, especially social media users, not to raise sensitive issues related to religion, race and the king.

Interim president Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din said that MCMC will cooperate with the police to monitor and take legal action towards any spread of message that relates to racism, religion and the king.

He said that any misinformation being shared is an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1998.

If a person is found guilty, the maximum fine is RM50,000 or imprisonment for a year or both.

The public should always be prudent and avoid sharing opinions mixed with hate, race and religion.

"Everyone should respect the final results of the 15th General Election (GE15) and the selection of the prime minister by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong with an open heart."

The president also said that the MCMC will continue to monitor and curb the spread of misinformation.

"Joint enforcement action by the police will be taken against those who are found involved based on the complaints of the public in accordance with the provisions of the law in order to protect the order and the interests of the community," said Mohamad Salim.

The public is able to lodge reports on inciting, provocative or insulting content to MCMC through the MCMC complaints portal linked at https://aduan.skmm.gov.my/.
