Batang Kali landslide: Death toll rises, 13 confirmed dead

KUALA LUMPUR: The death toll from the pre-dawn landslide at the Father's Organic Farm campsite near Jalan Genting-Batang Kali has increased to 13 said Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa.

She said seven victims hurt in the incident were sent for treatment to Hospital Selayang, Hospital Kuala Lumpur and Hospital Kuala Kubu Baru.

Meanwhile, police said that another 25 people are trapped at the incident site, while 23 were found safe in the pre-dawn incident.

Close to 100 victims were at the campsite when the incident took place.

Search and rescue efforts are still ongoing with the assistance of the fire department and other agencies such as the Voluntary Fire Association, Private Fire Department, police, Malaysian Civil Defence Force, Health Ministry and the SMART team

The height of the landslide is estimated to be 30 meters high with an estimated area of 3 acres being affected.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Datuk Norazam Khamis in an earlier statement said firefighters began arriving at the scene at about 3 am after receiving a distress call at 2.24 am.

He said search and rescue operations are being actively carried out including using the services of tracking dog units (K9) and Emergency Services Support Units.

Firemen from Kuala Kubu Baru, Rawang, Genting, Selayang, Shah Alam and Damansara as well as personnel and rescue equipment have been dispatched from KLIA, Petaling Jaya, Pandan, Ampang, Kajang and Andalas fire stations, he adds.
