Kedah speaker confirms letter from Johari Abdul

ALOR STAR: Kedah State Legislative speaker Datuk Juhari Bulat has confirmed receiving a letter from Gurun's Pakatan Harapan assemblyman Datuk Johari Abdul who had vacated his seat.

Juhari said he has informed the Election Commission on the matter.

"Yes, I have received it (Datuk Johari's resignation letter), Insyaallah it is legitimate.

"There will be no further actions on my behalf. I have informed the EC regarding the matter," he said.

It has yet to be confirmed if a by-election would take place to fill the vacated seat.

However, it is understood that the decision whether to hold a by-election in the state lies with the EC.

However, it appears to be unlikely for that to happen as the Kedah state election looms in the horizon.

Meanwhile, Kedah DAP chairman, Tan Kok Yew said he is open to assuming the role of state legislative assembly opposition leader following Johari's resignation.

The Derga assemblyman, however, said a proper discussion between all opposition assemblymen must be held before any state lawmaker can be nominated for the vacant post.

Earlier today, Johari announced that he had vacated his Gurun state seat, fuelling rumours that he is in the running for the Dewan Rakyat speaker's post.

Johari a former three-term Sungai Petani member of parliament said he submitted a letter over the matter to the Kedah State Legislative Assembly speaker Datuk Johari Bulat on Dec 13.
