GEORGE TOWN: A St John ambulance, on its way to send a patient to the Penang Hospital for treatment, skidded and rammed into a divider and tree before it landed on its side along Jalan Masjid Negeri here this afternoon.
The incident resulted in the 22-year-old ambulance driver, the 28-year-old medical assistant, the 54-year-old patient and her 24-year-old daughter with various degree of injuries.
Northeast district deputy police chief Superintendent V. Saravanan said, in the 4.40pm incident, the ambulance driver and medical assistant were on their way from Sungai Ara after picking up the patient and her daughter to the Penang Hospital
"When they approached Jalan Masjid Negeri (heading towards Jalan Scotland), the ambulance driver lost control, causing the ambulance to skid and knock into a divider and a tree on the right side of the road.
"The impact of the coalition resulted in the ambulance to overturn and landed on its side.
"The ambulance driver, the patient and her daughter were pinned to their seats and were safely ejected by firemen who arrived at the scene," he said this evening.
Saravanan said the ambulance driver sustained injuries to his hand and head, while the medical assistant escaped with minor injuries on the face and hand.
He said the patient was injured on her head while her daughter, her head and face.
Photos of the incident have since gone viral on social media.
The case is probed under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
