Tourist van crash: Eighth victim dies in HKL, one discharged

BENTONG: The death toll from the tragic Genting tourist van mishap at Km4.8 of Jalan Genting Highlands near Bentong on Feb 8 has increased to eight people.

Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said Chew Chong Beh, 73, who was treated at Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) died at 1.46pm today.

"Another victim of the Genting crash died at HKL today. Police can confirm that eight people involved in the crash have died.

"One victim treated at HKL was allowed to return home today. Four people are still warded in HKL while another is at the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital in Temerloh," he said in a statement today.

Ramli expressed the police department's condolences to all the crash victim's families.

In the 1.15pm accident, the tourist van skidded and crashed into a road divider at Km4.8 of Jalan Genting Highlands.

Fourteen people were travelling in the vehicle, including tour van driver Wong Choun Chiet, 49, his assistant, and 12 female passengers aged between 49 and 78 years old.

They were returning to Penang from Genting Highlands when the accident occurred.
