Flood victims in Johor now over 50,000

JOHOR BARU: The number of flood victims in Johor exceeded 50,000 as 8pm tonight, after 1,146 were evacuated to relief centres in affected districts.

Johor State Secretary Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani said with the latest addition, the figure of evacuees housed at 268 relief centres statewide now stands at 50,596.

He said the increase of evacuees was recorded in Batu Pahat, Segamat, Muar, Kota Tinggi, Tangkak and Mersing.

"Batu Pahat currently has 19,883 flood victims in 73 relief centres, while Segamat has 13,527 in 78 centres.

"In Muar, there are 4,235 victims in 25 relief centres; Kota Tinggi has 3,209 in 20 centres; Tangkak has 3,003 housed in 22 centres and Mersing has 1,103 in six centres," he said in a media statement, today.

He said Kluang saw a decrease in flood victims at 4,893, while Johor Baru has 393 and Pontian's number dropped to 286.

The number of evacuees in Kulai remained at 64.

Azmi who is also the Johor State Disaster Management Committee chairman said there were 15 new relief centres opened while eleven were closed.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Meteorological Department reported Kluang, Mersing and Kota Tinggi continue to be classified under yellow warning due to expected continuous rain.

As of now, all districts are experiencing clear weather, except for Kota Tinggi and Tangkak, where it has been raining since 8pm last night.
